We love it here, you will too.

Our story

When Bevan and Bridget Newlands travelled the world, they loved staying in unique accommodation that provided local experiences and opportunities to connect with nature, especially the night sky. So when they returned and settled on the family farm in Mackenzie Basin to raise their children, they set about creating a similar experience in their own backyard. The idea started as a hole in the ground with a piece of plastic over it, gradually morphing into the incredible product they have today.  The first SkyScape was opened in 2017, with an additional two in 2020. Discover how their simple structure turned into a luxury eco-destination here.

Newlands Family-Skyscape

An off-grid experience like no other

Built by hand and utilising the natural materials around them, Bevan and Bridget Newlands created SkyScape to blend in with the landscape, be self-contained and allow guests to make the most of the stunning natural landscape surrounding them. Whether that be taking a break from the Alps 2 Ocean cycleway, exploring the DOC  walking trail, doing a bit of astrophotography, or simply getting away from it all to celebrate a special occasion. A perfect setting to pop the question!

Built with the future in mind

The three SkyScapes have been built to make the most of passive energy and locally-sourced materials. These include:

  • Stonework gathered from nearby paddocks.
  • Power supplied by the sun through solar panels.
  • Double glazing, thermal mass and radiators to keep you warm in winter and through the chilly high-country nights.
  • Thermostatically controlled windows and air vents that automatically open on hot summer days.

Our SkyScapes feature an earthen roof above the kitchenette and bathrooms that blend in with the surroundings and help keep the rooms cool/warm. Solid concrete panels support the earthen roof, and the glass walls of the bedroom are framed in steel. They have been built to last!

A family business

SkyScape is situated on Omahau Hill Station and owned by the Newlands family. Bridget, Bevan and their two sons are your hosts and ensure that your stay is unforgettable for all the right reasons.
